The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, was down for a second session on Monday, falling by 1.2% to a near one-week low of 2,628 points, pressured by the larger vessel segments. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, also decreased for a second day, dropping by 1.7% to its lowest in nearly a week at 3,726 points; and the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell by 1.6% to its lowest since July 30 at 2,075 points. Among smaller vessels, the supramax index edged up by 0.1% to 1,888 points.

Silver prices were little changed below $54 an ounce on Monday, hovering near their lowest levels since November 2025, as investors assessed easing oil prices ahead of this week’s central bank meetings. Oil retreated from last week’s rally but remained near six-month highs amid hopes of easing US-Iran tensions, while potential supply disruptions continued to pose inflation risks. The Federal Reserve is widely expected to hold rates steady on Wednesday, although markets now assign more than an 80% probability to another hike in December, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Investors are also awaiting Thursday’s US PCE inflation data for further clues on monetary policy, with attention turning to the November 3 US midterm elections. Elsewhere, the European Central Bank and Bank of Japan are expected to leave rates unchanged, while the Bank of Canada is widely anticipated to deliver its first rate hike since 2023.

Silver Holds Near Lows as Markets Await Fed Decision

Gold prices were little changed near $4,000 an ounce on Monday after hitting a more than three-month low of $3,975 on Friday, as falling oil prices eased inflation concerns ahead of this week’s central bank meetings. Oil retreated from last week’s surge but remained near six-month highs amid hopes of easing US-Iran tensions, with potential supply disruptions still posing inflation risks. The Fed is scheduled to announce its rate decision on Wednesday, with policymakers widely expected to hold rates steady following September’s hike. Meanwhile, the probability of another rate increase in December has climbed above 80%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Investors also await Thursday’s US PCE inflation data for clues on the rate outlook, while attention is turning to the November 3 US midterm elections. Elsewhere, the ECB and the Bank of Japan are also expected to keep rates unchanged, while the Bank of Canada is widely expected to deliver its first rate hike since 2023.

Gold Little-Changed as Markets Await Fed Decision

The Ibovespa plunged more than 16% to below 172,000 on Monday as Brazilian assets sold off following President Lula’s victory over Flávio Bolsonaro in the presidential runoff. The decline reversed the optimism that had supported markets since the first round, when Bolsonaro outperformed polling estimates and finished ahead of Lula. Investors had widely viewed a potential Bolsonaro administration as more likely to rein in public spending, considered essential to lowering interest rates. Markets are now reassessing fiscal risks, including persistent primary budget deficits and the trajectory of public debt, as well as institutional risks surrounding the electoral process. Losses were broad-based. Petrobras sank 16%, Itaú dropped more than 15.5%, BB plunged over 31%, Itaúsa tumbled more than 16% and Axia retreated 19%. In contrast, Vale surged over 8% ahead of its earnings release after the market close. WEG gained 4% after announcing plans to acquire the PCS business of L&S Electric.
